James Hubert “Bird Legs” Ferguson began his life journey on September 16, 1936 in Anawalt, WV. He transitioned to his heavenly home on March 4, 2013 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital surrounded by family and friends. James attended Tazewell County High School and continued his education in the US Army where he served three tours in Vietnam. During one tour of duty, he was stationed in Huntsville, AL where he met and married the love of his life, Christine Woods. James retired from the military in 1975. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Grace Pridgen; brothers, Nathaniel and Marshall Pridgen; sister, Willie Mae Weatherspoon. James accepted Christ at an early age. He served as Deacon at Midway Church of Christ, (DOC) until his illness prevented him from being in regular attendance. He also served as President of the Usher Board and was elected to become an Elder with the Church. James was affiliated with several local organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife of thirty five years, Christine Ferguson; two daughters, Wanda “Kay” Percell of Sanford, NC and Donna Watkins (Jamey) of Hampton, VA; one brother, Robert Pridgen of Akron, OH; three sisters, Mary Fountain of Youngstown, OH, Doris Jennings of Roanoke, VA, and Christine Pridgen of Tazewell, VA; brothers in law, LeRoy Rice (Pearline) of Huntsville, AL, William Calloway (Margaret) and Tyrus Chislom (Betty) all of Chattanooga, TN, Kenneth Erskine (Gladys) of Huntsville, AL, Roosevelt Woods (Jo-Anne) of Pontiac, MI, Albert Woods of Rochester Hills, MI, and Ronnie Woods of Mobile, AL; sister in law, Letha Woods of Nashville, TN; five grandchildren, Leo Percell, Danielle Hosby, Dontez Percell, Johnathan Viney and Uniqua Viney; six great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, three who served as dedicated caregivers, Derek Pridgen, Vanessa Pridgen, and Teresa Nelson; great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Reverend Tyrus Chislom officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens at Bluefield, VA where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell, VA. Pallbearers will be Derek Pridgen, Wesley Calloway, Tony Bristo, Jonathan Erskine, Tyrone Smith, Michael Peoples, Darryl M. Woods, and Keith Paxton. Honorary pallbearers are Beverly Smith, Roger Davis, Hubert Moore, Eugene Davis, Robert “Pete” Davis, John Horton, Terry Ward, Rod Paxton, and Sam Watkins, Jr.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
