William “Diggs” “Sputnik” A. McDonald, age 55 of Tazewell, VA went home to his heavenly father, Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN following a short illness. Born December 1, 1957 in Tazewell, VA he was the son of the late Janice F. McDonald. He was raised in the home of his loving grandfather, the late, Grat A. McDonald. In addition to his mother and grandfather, he was preceded in death by his father, George M. Smith; William was a member of the Midway Church of Christ, DOC in Tazewell, VA and was a graduate of Tazewell High School. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army and afterward employed by Maplewood Cemetery until his Muscular Dystrophy progressed. He loved fishing singing, westerns, and the Dallas Cowboys. He was very outspoken, kind hearted, and loveable.
He leaves to cherish his memory, five sisters, Jessie McDonald-Garnes of Accokeek, MD, Lucille McDonald-Gibson and husband, Jerome, and Eva McDonald both of Tazewell, VA, Rubena Smith of Newark, NJ and Leola Harris and husband, Frank of Hampton, VA; three brothers, George R. Smith and wife, Marva, Melvin E. Smith and wife, Sophronia, and Elmore B. Smith all of Maryland; nine nieces, twelve nephews, thirteen great nieces, thirteen great nephews, and nine great great nieces and nephews; one uncle, Beverly Smith of Tazewell, VA; two aunts, Katie McDonald-Dennis of Tazewell, VA and Celestine Harmon of Los Angeles, CA; and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, VA. Pallbearers will be Terrence McDonald, Thomas McDonald, Jessie McDonald, Shaquille McDonald, Aaron Davis, Shea Donovan McDonald, Shea Moore, and Shawn Davis. Honorary pallbearers are Grat “Peanut” McDonald, Dax “D.J.” Jordan, Keith Morrison, Emory Jordan, Ed Watkins, Roger Davis, Charles Viney, Dwight Winfrey, Calvin Mitchell, Paul Winfrey, Jr. and Robert “Blue” Dennis.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
